Rory Hayman

Since retiring and moving to South Dakota, my wife and I spend a great deal of time exploring and hiking the many well known (and not so well known) areas of Spearfish Canyon and the Black Hills. I believe landscape beauty can be found anywhere if you can learn to "see" and not just "look" (even in your own backyard). That is why much of my work is more intimate in nature.  When I find a composition I like, I'll imagine how it might look at different times of the day, different weather conditions and at different seasons of the year. I'll return to that location again and again in an effort to capture the scene in it’s varying states throughout the year.

My landscape photos have won several awards, the most prestigious of which was in the annual Dahl Mountain Photo Exhibition in Rapid City, South Dakota where my image “Swimming Leaves” took first place in the Experienced / Professional category in 2023 and then in 2024 “Martian Night” won best of show.

Working it

I also work with many local Real Estate agents to photograph and display their home or business listings in various advertising media. My architectural photos have also been featured in several prominent area publications such as Black Hills Life Style and Black Hills Builders magazines.

Thanks for visiting my website. I hope I was able to capture each image in a way that makes you feel the same emotions I always feel in the wilds or under a beautiful night sky.

I'm Rory Hayman. My wife Sherry and I live in Spearfish, South Dakota in the beautiful Northern Black Hills and just outside mighty Spearfish Canyon, where I draw most of my photographic inspiration.

I used to produce and shoot training videos and photos for the manufacturing plant I worked for and that is where I developed a love for photography and in particular, landscape photography. Only recently did I expand into nightscape photography.
