Birch Blizzard

This thick birch grove is really chaotic and it made hard to come up with a pleasing composition. In the end, I found a shooting spot on the edge of the grove, shot through the many branches and twigs with a small aperture and changed the image to black and white. Sort of looks like a snowy storm.

Afternooner

A couple of years ago we were at the arts festival in Custer State Park, SD and decided to go for a little hike after lunch. The light was pretty harsh but the calm winds made for some really nice reflections in this small pond. I guess there are some nice images to he had even in the afternoon sun.

Swimminng Leaves II

I shot a similar image at this location a year ago on the trail to devils bathtub in Spearfish Canyon, but there are a few differences this time. The circle of swirling leaves is tighter due to the fallen birch branch and the constraining effect it has on the whirlpool.

Misty Morning

The hills and meadows in Spearfish Canyon look like a rain forest this year because of all the wet weather we’ve had. On a dreary, misty and foggy morning an atmosphere like this can evoke many moods; for me it’s a time to reflect about the seasons past and the coming autumn and winter.

Misty Fjords

Misty Fjords National Monument in Alaska definitely lived up to it’s name on the day we cruised this magnificent scenery. Towering mountains rising from the sea, rain showers producing hundreds of waterfalls and the low misty clouds all working together to sculpt this reverent place.

Margerie Glacier

As we cruised up glacier bay in southeast Alaska, it was doubtful we would get any kind of look at the Margerie Glacier because of the dense fog we were experiencing, but as we approached the fog began to lift and this magnificent panorama slowly emerged. Shooting a 5 shot pano from the deck of a moving ship was challenging to say the least and it took several tries. This is the one I was most pleased with.

Waiting For a Close Encounter

At Devils Tower National Monument I kept hearing the theme from the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” as I was capturing this multi image panorama, so I put myself in the last panel and waited for the space craft to appear but, alas, nothing. I don’t know where the music was coming from exactly; somebody watching the movie at the campground? A ranger presentation perhaps? I never found out.

A Little Bough

While walking along the trail to Spearfish Falls on a misty and foggy morning I spotted this little pine bough at the bottom of a spruce tree and liked the way the soft and diffused light was separating the needles from the darker background.

Martian Night II

This is another image from my night at Badlands National Park in South Dakota. It was a mostly cloudy evening I was waiting for it to get dark and I was getting concerned that the sky may not clear, so when I saw a small break in the clouds, I started shooting. In my last weeks post I got a clear view of the milky way, but in this one, not so much. However, I like the horse shoe shaped formation in the foreground which becomes the main subject in the composition.

Martian Night

This was my first attempt at night photography since I had my Canon 5D III camera astro modified. This was a single shot captured at Badlands National Park in South Dakota with about a 30% crescent moon setting in the west. I liked the way the landscape has a red/orange color cast, reminds me of some of the images of Mars I’ve seen from NASA.
